“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 John 2:15)
The world is recognizing today’s Christians as its own. They hardly see any validity in our claims that we are different from them because Christ lives in us.
I imagine a child playing at a park with sand. Without her knowledge, the little pockets in her dress are all filled with sand. This is how today’s Christians are; they say they belong to Christ; however, they have been filled with the love and attachments of this world that they fail to bear the image of Christ. The child’s mother takes her home and immediately cleans her and empties the sand filled in between her clothes. I cannot think of a mother who lets her child with dirty clothes dwell in the house without first cleaning her. God is able to empty all those pockets in our life that give us an image contrary to the image of Christ so that we may dwell in the presence of Christ as His children cleansed and undefiled.
Romans 8:16-17 says, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ”
We have this privilege that we are heirs of the kingdom of Christ through sonship but this not a mere privilege alone. It comes with a responsibility of following Christ. Christ is the heir of the eternal inheritance and we become heirs because we bear Christ’s image. But if anyone loves their life and things of this life enough, then they cannot love or follow Christ.
If the world cannot see Christ in you, then the truth is you do not have Christ. Jesus said, “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you” (John 15:18). True followers of Christ are not accepted by this world; if you belong to the world then you do not belong to God.
Jesus said “If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” (John 15:19) and “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain”. So, if you do not belong to the world why do strive as though you do and as though the world is yours?
Charles Spurgeon in one of his sermons preached “O Christian! the world is not thy friend. If it is, then thou art not God’s friend; for he who is the friend of the world is the enemy of God”
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2)
To a person with an unrenewed mind everything is acceptable and good. But not so with the Christian whose mind is renewed. He is discrete and tests for what is good. God is able to cleanse and empty the filth of this world from you so that you serve Him with a renewed mind that understands His perfect will.
“Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness,” (Hebrews 3:7-8)
For Christ is coming soon for a bride that is not corrupted by this world but has lived in purity for her groom. Christian, mind that you do not play harlotry with the world but just as you have been promised to one husband, Christ, strive that you may present yourself in purity to Him.
